project details

he Shidaa Foundation is a non‑profit operating in Canada and Ghana, dedicated to eliminating learning inequality and learning poverty. They provide scholarships, bursaries, and school supplies to children, plus run donation drives (e.g. backpacks, books, supplies) and special initiatives (e.g. “Wheels to School” wheelchair provision). The website (shidaa.org) serves to present their mission, showcase their programs/campaigns, accept donations, recruit volunteers, and keep communities informed of progress.

The client needed a website that would:

Design & Branding Phase

  • Visual Style & Brand Identity: Created a clean, compassionate nonprofit style—friendly fonts, warm & trustworthy colour palette, strong imagery of children, learning, community.

  • Logo & Branding: If involved, refined or reworked logo, defined typography, colour scheme, image style (e.g. photos, iconography) so that the brand feels unified and credible.

  • Information Architecture & Wireframes / Theme Selection:

    • Key pages defined: Home, About Us, Causes / Projects, Donate, Volunteer / Get Involved, News / Stories, Contact.

    • Wireframes or planned layouts for: homepage (hero section, featured cause(s), impact stats, calls to action), cause detail pages, news / stories listing, donation form.

    • Navigation structured so visitors can quickly find how to help, current campaigns, impact stories.

Development Phase (WordPress Using a Theme)

Choice of Theme

  • Used a robust, nonprofit‑friendly WordPress theme that supports donation functionality, volunteer sign‑ups, campaigns, and media (images, blog posts).

  • Customised theme to align with Shidaa’s brand styles: colours, typography, layout.

Key Features & Implementation

  • Donate / Campaigns Module: Campaign pages such as “A Library for School”, “Wheels to School”, “Bag to School”, etc., each with their own detail, fundraising goal, updates.

  • News / Story Blog: Posts showing recent efforts (e.g. raising funds for a wheelchair in Axim) to humanize impact, keep donors informed.

  • About / Mission Page: Clear mission statement, “Who We Are”, leadership team, overview of geographical areas served.

  • Volunteer / Partner / Donation Info: Contact forms for those wishing to donate supplies, volunteer, or partner. Also sections to request donations from the Foundation.

  • Impact Metrics & Stories: E.g. statistics on how many children served, stories like Emmanuel’s, transparently showing how donations are used.

Responsive & Usability Considerations

  • The theme was responsive, ensuring people on mobile devices can read, donate, find resources easily.

  • Used image galleries/photos to emotionally engage visitors (while optimizing for quick load).

  • Clear call‑to‑action buttons (“Donate”, “Volunteer”, “Apply for Resources”) placed in visible spots.

Maintenance & Content Updates

  • WordPress backend structured so the admin team can add new cause pages, update progress, add blog / news posts, adjust donation targets etc.

  • Theme supports multilingual or dual‑region content (Canada / Ghana) where needed, or at least clear indication of dual operations.

Challenges & Solutions

ChallengeSolution
Ensuring donations are clearly linked to specific campaigns and transparent in how funds / resources are usedBuilt campaign‑specific pages with goals, progress updates, stories; visible transparency builds trust.
Managing media (images, large photos of children, media updates) without slowing site speedOptimised image files, used compressed formats, lazy load; select theme with efficient media handling.
Serving audiences across countries (Canada and Ghana), possibly with different expectations, regions, or resource constraintsDesign content structure clearly separates what applies to each region; map causes/campaigns by location; ensure shipping / supply donation info specifies region.
Keeping campaign / cause info current (goals, progress, stories)Use WordPress custom post types or page templates; train content teams; ensure backend is straightforward.
